CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia’s new government on Thursday dropped the 4-year-old prosecution of a lawyer over his alleged attempt to help East Timor prove that Australia had spied on the then-fledgling nation’s government in 2004 during multibillion-dollar oil and gas negotiations.
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus maintained the longstanding government stance of refusing to confirm or deny whether the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, a spy agency that operates out of Australian embassies, bugged government offices in the East Timorese capital Dili.

North Dakota's only abortion clinic is suing to block enforcement of a trigger law banning abortion following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. The Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo said in its court filing Thursday that the ban violates the rights to life, safety and happiness guaranteed by the state constitution that protect the right to abortion. The suit also questions Attorney General Drew Wrigley’s statement that the ban takes effect July 28. The clinic argues that the Supreme Court has released its opinion but hasn't yet issued its judgment. The clinic says that's a separate step necessary to trigger the North Dakota law.

A judge in Atlanta has denied bond for rapper Gunna, who’s charged with racketeering along with rapper Young Thug and more than two dozen other people. Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville had previously denied bond for Gunna, and on Thursday held a hearing on his request to reconsider that decision. Gunna's given name is Sergio Kitchens. Glanville said he worried Kitchens might threaten or intimidate witnesses if he were freed ahead of trial. Prosecutors have said that Young Thug co-founded a violent street gang in Atlanta called Young Slime Life and that Kitchens has a management role within the gang. Young Thug's given name is Jeffery Lamar Williams.
Invasive giant African land snails that can eat building plaster and stucco, consume hundreds of varieties of plants and carry diseases that affect humans have been detected once again in Florida, where officials say work has begun to eradicate the pests. The snails grow as long as 8 inches and have a distinctive whirled, brown mottled shell. Their presence was confirmed by state agriculture officials in New Port Richey on June 23. The location in Pasco County is just north of the Tampa Bay area. Florida has twice before eradicated the snails in other parts of the state, most recently a 10-year effort in Miami-Dade County that cost $23 million and ended in 2021.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned Kyiv that it should quickly accept Moscow's terms or prepare for the worst, adding ominously that Russia has barely started its action. Speaking Thursday at a meeting with leaders of the Kremlin-controlled parliament, Putin accused Western allies of fueling the hostilities, charging that “the West wants to fight us until the last Ukrainian.” He added menacingly that "largely speaking, we haven’t even yet started anything in earnest.” He declared that Russia remains ready to sit down for talks to end the fighting, adding that “those who refuse to do so should know that the longer it lasts the more difficult it will be for them to make a deal with us.”

He was 82. His manager Matt DelPiano said he died on Wednesday. A tweet from Caan's official account said, “The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.” Caan introduced himself to a new generation playing Walter, the workaholic, stone-faced father of Buddy’s Will Ferrell in “Elf.”

Burkina Faso’s former President Blaise Compaore returned to the West African country Thursday, the first time since being ousted in a popular uprising eight years ago. Compaore, who’s been in exile in neighboring Ivory Coast since 2014, came back to be part of an unprecedented meeting on Friday of former heads of state to discuss Burkina Faso’s future. The ruling junta issued a statement saying that Compaore is to participate in a meeting of past presidents including Michel Kafando, Yacouba Isaac Zida, Jean-Baptiste Ouedraogo and Roch Marc Christian Kabore. It’s unclear how long Compaore will stay in the country.

German parliament has elected as the government’s new anti-discrimination commissioner a journalist whose nomination last month had sparked controversy. 42-year-old Ferda Ataman had written an op-ed defending calling Germans without immigrant roots “potatoes,” which can be derogatory. She was elected on Thursday. Members of the Free Democrats, who are part of the governing coalition, as well as lawmakers with the opposition conservative Christian Democrats and the far-right Alternative for Germany had sharply criticized the choice. They questioned Ataman’s suitability for the post, calling her a left-wing activist. Her supporters called the accusations against her slanderous and in part racist because she’s a second-generation immigrant.

The Phoenix Mercury All-Star pleaded guilty to drug possession charges on the second day of her trial in a Russian court in a case that could see her sentenced to up to 10 years in prison. The players union issued a statement hours after the plea was entered, saying that “the WNBPA stands with Brittney Griner. With a 99 percent conviction rate, Russia’s process is its own." The plea came a day after President Joe Biden had a phone conversation with her wife Cherelle and told her he is working to free the two-time Olympic gold medalists as soon as possible.

Iraq's oil minister says the government will take steps to enforce a recent court decision to annul oil contracts in the country's northern Kurdish region. Ihsan Abdul-Jabbar Ismail said on Thursday contracts between international oil companies and the semi-autonomous Kurdish-run northern region amounted to oil smuggling and his ministry would take action. He said the ministry would target a total of 17 companies. Kurdish officials, including the ruling Kurdistan Democratic Party in Irbil, have dismissed the decision as politicized. The court rulings have occurred in the midst of political upheaval in Baghdad, where Iran-backed groups have mounted pressure on Kurdish parties to push forward with government formation.

Once Wimbledon ends, the ATP men's tour will follow the lead of the WTA women's tour and let coaches offer some words and hand signals to players during matches at all tournaments. Illinois’ “red-flag” law could have stopped, or at least slowed down, the suspect in the Independence Day parade shooting from being able to buy the gun he is accused of using to kill seven people and wound dozens more. Police in Highland Park were called twice to the home of Robert Crimo III in 2019 — once after he tried to commit suicide and again when he allegedly threatened to “kill everyone” in his family. On either occasion, they could have sought a restraining order to prevent Crimo from buying guns for up to six months. Instead, Illinois State Police approved Crimo for a gun permit just four months later.
A campaign to raise Nebraska’s minimum wage to $15 an hour from the current $9 says it has collected more than enough signatures to place the issue before voters in November. Raise the Wage Nebraska says it gathered 160,000 raw signatures from all 93 Nebraska counties. The measure would ratchet up the wage to $15 hourly by 2026. The first incremental increase would bump it to $10.50 an hour in January 2023. At least 87,000 valid signatures from registered voters are required to qualify a measure for the general election ballot. Nebraska also requires petition campaigns to get signatures from at least 5% of the voters in 38 or more counties.
Atlanta’s airport is getting $40 million to help expand a cramped concourse. It's one of the largest in a $1 billion group of grants to 85 airports that the Biden administration announced Thursday. The money will only cover a fraction of the cost to widen Concourse D at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Concourse D was designed to handle smaller planes, with a central walkway only 20 feet wide. It now handles full-sized jets, leaving it overcrowded and lacking in amenities. Airport General Manager Balram “B” Bheodari says overall work will cost hundreds of millions of dollars. The rest would be paid with ticket taxes and airline rent.
